The Margaret River is the quiet achiever of Australia's wine scene, slowly building a reputation over the last decade as an outstanding producer of local wine.

Tourists may visit for the wine, but they often stay a little longer for the picturesque scenery and gourmet restaurants.

Margaret River enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with dry hot summers and cool wet winters. This is ideal for a diverse range of wines, but the region's specialty is the earthy cabernet sauvignon. Margaret River shirazes, verdelhos, and sauvignon blancs are also amongst Australia's finest.

Since its first vines were planted some 40 years ago, the Margaret River wine region has grown to support more than 200 vineyards. The region's winegrowers push the boundaries of wine making by using a range of innovative techniques and ingredients.

Madfish Winery

The Madfish Winery is set atop a hill, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful views of the vineyard below as they taste the winery's delicious drops. The cellar door offers tastings of Madfish and Howard Park varieties. Travelers are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to soak up the winery's gorgeous parklands.

Birdwood Fruit Winery offers wine with a difference. Their innovative wines are made with fruits like plums, cherries, peaches, oranges, pears and more. They also create some wonderful ports and liquers. The free cellar door tastings allow tourists to enjoy these truly unique creations.

Amberley Estate Winery
Corner of Wildwood and Thornton Roads, Yallingup
Amberley Estate is one of the most popular wineries in the Margaret River region. It's famous for its chenin blanc, which traditionally sells out every year before the next vintage is released. The winery also offers award-winning shirazes, semillons, and cabernet varieties at its busy cellar door.

There's more than your standard tasting sessions, with daily behind-the-scenes tours of the winery, an award-winning restaurant, and an art gallery showcasing more than 100 works from leading Australian artists.

Serventy Organic Wines

Serventy is the oldest organic winery in Western Australia. The winery serves up a small but varied range of wines, including shirazes, pinot noirs, chardonnays, and rosés. Serventy Organic Wines also offers accommodation and wedding facilities.

Margaret River is located in the southwest region of Western Australia, almost 300 kilometers from the state's capital, Perth.

The quickest way to get there is to drive along the Kwinana Freeway, and then take the Old Coast Road, followed by the Bussell Highway. This route is clearly signposted and takes around three hours.

Alternatively, tourists could drive down the South Western Highway. This route takes a little longer to reach the Margaret River, but the scenery along the way is so beautiful it's worth it if you have the time to spare.

Buses travel from Perth to Margaret River daily for tourists without access to a car. Southwest Coachlines runs a service seven days a week from the Mounts Bay bus terminal in Perth to the Charles West Avenue bus station in the Margaret River. One-way tickets cost $31 for adults, $21.70 for seniors, and $15.50 for students.

Cowaramup offers the type of friendly service and colorful characters you'd expect from a small town. Taunton Farm Caravan Park is ideal for budget travelers, while The Tasty Olive Bed and Breakfast pampers visitors with an olive platter on arrival.
