What to See in Wine Country
Visiting Cape Town is one of the most exciting and interesting vacations you will ever take. There is so much to see here including the wineries and wine establishments. In each of the wine towns you will find quaint streets with various national monuments, art galleries, museums and stunning restaurants that serve international and local cuisine with the best local wines.
Each area along your trip will have exceptional attractions allowing you to enjoy your journey through the winelands even further. In the town of Hermanus for instance you can experience the fascinating sights of the Southern Right Whales that come into Walker Bay to breed. This is perhaps what the area is most famous for and during September every year they host a famous whale festival in honor of the majestic creatures.
Near Constantia you will find among the vineyards other wonderful coastal towns like Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town where the Peninsula route is developing. Cape Point is a super place to visit and the restaurants in Simons Town and in the nature reserve itself are second to none. The beaches here are fantastic too attracting many tourists from all over the world.
In Simon’s Town you can marvel at the South African Naval Base with massive guns at Lower North Battery just as you enter the town. The harbor is filled with large navy vessels and during the Navy Festival in March, the public can board certain of the vessels including the submarines. There are lots of museums and art galleries as well as the famous Penguins at Boulders Beach that are also very interesting to visit. During the Simon’s Town Penguin Festival you can enjoy the town in all its glory as they come together to honor the quirky African Penguins that have made this their home. From here, you can also take a trip out to seal island and view the entire bay alongside the colony of Cape Fur Seals.
In the northern regions, the main attractions are the wild flowers and fields of proteas and fynbos with more than 1600 species covering the different areas. In Franschhoek you will find wonderful place of interest like the Huguenot Monument right at the top of the main street as well as some old churches.
Paarl will allow you to see the dominant Voortrekker Monument towering over the town as a reminder of this areas, mainly Afrikaans, heritage. The Breede River Valley will take you to the exciting Breede River where you can enjoy various river-rafting adventures, abseiling, and fishing on your vacation. Here you can also attend the Up the Creek annual rock concerts with many of the country’s top bands and artists.
Aside from the historic allure and Victorian charm of Stellenbosch, South Africa, this area also has many attractions involving music and culture. There are plenty of jazz cafes and live music and comedy venues, where you can experience the unique South African culture scene. The night life here is wonderful and one of the most popular venues for performances, also situated on a wine estate is Spier. Here you can enjoy picnics by the lake, wine tasting, concerts and theater performance at the outdoor amphitheatre as well as accommodation in one of the cottages overlooking the tennis courts, swimming pool, gardens and waterways.
Tulbagh and the surrounding regions are home to many of the most unspoilt scenery in the Cape and here you can enjoy hiking trails and horseback riding in the nature reserves. You will also find many old Cape Dutch, Victorian and Edwardian style buildings here to view.
Durbanville, South Africa is more of a residential area and here you will find plenty to do in the form of shopping. The Tyger Valley Mall is very close by with a wide selection of all kinds of shops to suit everyone. You can also find lovely health spas and wellness centers along with various museums like the Pottery Museum. Music forms a large part of the lifestyle here, and along with the various live music venues, you will also be able to attend large scale concerts at the massive Bellville Velodrome.
