Wine Tasting Tours in Little Karoo
For a diverse range of wines that will exceed your expectations take a look at the wines grown in the semi arid Little Karoo. Although this area is mostly dry and desert like it was once a lake and the majority of viticulture occurs in the little riverines and valleys found between the rugged mountain slopes. It is known today as the Port Wine Capital of South Africa.
The semi arid climate is not always conducive to the production of wines per say, but here they have perfected the Muscadel which is an international hit. This hot, dry area with many micro climates and little rainfall has also produced some premium white and red wines along with ports and brandies.
The Best Little Karoo Wines
The cellars of Barrydale, Calitzdorp, Boplaas, De Krans, Ladismith (producing the first organic white wine in the Southern Cape), Montague, Excelsior and Rietrivier are some of the most popular in this area. They produce lovely Muscadels in the calcium rich, alluvial soils together with the fresh Swartberg Mountain water. Here you will also find award winning Cabernets and dry white wines.
